On June 27, 1999 at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, Mrs. Mary Brogan, wife of Florida Lt. Governor Frank Brogan, passed away from complications related to cancer.

Mrs. Brogan was born on July 31, 1954 in Cincinnati, Ohio. She received an undergraduate degree in elementary education and a master of education degree from Florida Atlantic University. She began her career as a third grade teacher at Port Salerno Elementary School in Stuart. Mary served as Assistant Principal at both Pinewood Elementary and Port Salerno Elementary, and in 1994, when Frank Brogan was elected Florida's Education Commissioner, she worked as an educational consultant for the T.E.A.M. Center for the Study of Teaching and Learning at Florida State University, and for the Southeast Regional Vision for Education (SERVE) program. STATEMENT REGARDING PASSING OF MARY BROGAN
By Dominic Calabro, Florida TaxWatch President and Chief Executive Officer

"All of Florida should mourn today on the passing of Mary Brogan, Frank's soulmate and true love. She was a wonderful woman and a real force for unity in this state. "I was privileged to serve with Mary on the Florida Education Foundation where she served as our ambassador to teachers, the business community and to parents. She epitomized the role of an ambassador in every way. She looked for ways to bring people together to make progress and she touched people on a personal level with her warm spirit. Mary encouraged people to put aside local differences, and to look at the big picture -- and to focus on kids and what was best for them. She was a loving person, compassionate and genuine and that was reflected in all of her work.

NOTE: The Florida Education Foundation is the direct support organization for the Florida Department of Education.
