The Florida Citizenship Institute

TRAINING FLORIDA’S NEXT GENERATION OF BUSINESS & COMMUNITY LEADERS

Being a Florida TaxWatch Citizenship Institute graduate is more than just a line on a resumé. You will learn firsthand from Florida’s most influential policy leaders and business executives how state and local government policies impact your community and your business, and the most effective ways to ensure that your voice is heard and respected.
BUSINESS LEADERSHIP

While many companies enlist the help of experienced lobby teams and government relations professionals to help navigate through challenging bureaucracy and red tape, business leadership must understand the key issues of taxation, budgeting, and regulation in order to best manage this public affairs support staff.

APPLIED KNOWLEDGE

Institute graduates will be prepared to ask the right questions about governments’ proposed and pending policies. Participants will understand the key points, whether issues have federal, state, or local components, whether they are statutory or administrative regulations, and what the differences mean to your business.

Institute Topics & Activities

GOVERNMENT OPERATIONS

Graduates will learn about the structure and operations of state and local governments, who the key players are at each level, the most effective methods for affecting changes in policy, how to ensure that your voice is heard, and the true difference between special and public interests from nationally recognized experts and former government leaders.

REGULATION & PERMITTING

Not understanding government regulation and permitting requirements can cost businesses significant time and money. The TaxWatch Citizenship Institute will help graduates understand the different levels of regulation, how permitting requirements are administered, and the methods by which rules and measures are adopted, and amended.

BUDGET &
TAXATION

Graduates will complete the budget and taxation portion of the program with a clear understanding of how the state and local governments’ budgets are constructed, the meanings of different classifications in the state budget, the ways in which tax dollars can be spent, and the impacts of budget and taxation policies on your business.

PRACTICAL
EXERCISES

More than just classroom time, the TaxWatch Citizenship Institute puts participants into applied scenarios to use what they have learned. Participants in Class 1 were given the opportunity to research a real-life public project, and present their position on the project to local government officials, played by Governor Bob Martinez and Secretary Michael Sole.

What Institute Graduates Say

“The Florida TaxWatch Citizenship Institute is an extremely valuable learning opportunity. Through highly respected speakers, community leaders, former legislators, and elected officials, the Institute provided great insight and value into the interworkings of government at both a county and state level, taught the importance of making your voice heard, explained the budgeting and taxation process, and provided great insight on how to be an effective and respected leader. Being able to interact one-on-one with these leaders, ask questions, and learn from their experience was the greatest benefit of all.”

“The Florida TaxWatch Citizenship Institute offers an invaluable opportunity to closely inspect the interplay between the public and private sectors while fully exploring what it means to be an engaged citizen. Our frank conversations and hands-on practice with former lawmakers and top leaders amounted to the kind of behind-the-scenes look at governance and policymaking that you don’t get from school or news media.”
